‘Kochadaiiyaan’ box office collections: Rajinikanth inks a first
The big ticket release starring superstar Rajinikanth and Deepika Padukone, ‘Kochadaiiyaan’ inked a first in the Indian animation film industry in terms of box office collections.
Thalaivar Rajinikanth’s much-awaited motion capture technology film ‘Kochadaiiyaan’ saw a bumper response in South centers. Calculating the box office collections earned from all six languages (in both 2D and 3D versions), the film managed to earn Rs 27 crore (nett) in India, making it the highest weekend opening for any Indian animation film.
However, there have been some negatives with constant comparisons between Rajinikanths live action form and the animated ‘incarnation’.
Manoj Desai of G7 said that although the film saw 70 – 80 per cent occupancy, it did not meet his expectations, as there were constant comparisons between Rajinikanths live action form in other films and the animated avatar in ‘Kochadaiiyaan’.
It looks like the weekdays will see a drop because there is no excitement for the film at all. Thanks to the fact that the ticket prices here are cheaper, fans were seen enjoying the film. But I don’t think it will enjoy a long run like Rajinikanth’s other films, said Desai.
Trade expert Taran Adarsh said that although the film did below average business at most centers, the Tamil version of the film took Tamil Nadu by storm from the commencement of the first show itself. A Rajinikanth film is considered an event in South and the stupendous response, coupled with a strong word of mouth, will ensure a glorious innings for the film at the box office, stated Adarsh.
At the PVR chain of cinemas, the Tamil version got an upper hand with around 70 per cent occupancy, while the Hindi version was around 15 per cent. The Tamil version has had a much better response than the Hindi version, mentioned Gautam Desai, COO, PVR cinemas.
