Rajinikanth remembers director Mahendran on birth anniversary: Fortunate to act with him in Petta

On the occasion of director Mahendran’s 81st birth anniversary, Rajinikanth spoke at length about his films and his relationship with him.

Superstar Rajinikanth owes a lot to legendary director Mahendran, whose 81st birth anniversary falls today (July 25). On the special occasion, the Darbar star took some time to speak at length about his relationship with the late director.

Mahendran’s son John Mahendran shared a heart-melting voice note of Rajinikanth, who recollected the memories of working with Mahendran during the early days of his career. The actor also said how he was fortunate enough to share screen space with Mahendran in recent film, Petta.

Rajnikanth, in the voice note, said, “If people still remember my performance in Mullum Malarum, its all because of Mahendran. He’s my very close friend and is someone whom I always look upto. He was never behind money and fame. All he wanted was to give good films that stays in our hearts forever. In fact, a few days before, I happened to watch his film, Uthiri Pookal, and I couldn’tcontrol my tears. We have lost him soon, but I was fortunate enough to act with him in Petta. I also spent sometime with him in Kasi during the shoot. It’s been two years since he passed away and I feel happy in remembering him on this day.”

Mahendran made his debut as a director with the 1978 film, Mullum Malarum, which took Rajinikanth’s career to another level. The film set the cash registers ringing at the box office and is till date considered as one of his best films.

Mahendran began his career as a writer in the 60s and went on to direct 12 films. He was behind some of the iconic films like Uthiri Pookkal, Nenjathai Killathe, and Nandu. Apart from Petta, he played pivotal roles in Kamaraj (2004) and Vijay’s Theri.
