Speculations rife over symbol of Rajinikanth’s new political party

Speculations over Rajinikanth’s much anticipated new political party reached a new high after the Election Commission of India released a letter providing symbols to parties that will contest in 2021 elections.

Until December 14, the only information available on Rajinikanth’s party was that the superstar will launch the party in January 2021 and the launch date will be informed on December 31. Little to no information is available as to how he has been preparing for the tedious process of applying for his party’s registration.

While to the public it looked like Rajinikanth is busy with movie shoots and not very concerned about the party, a dedicated team of techies had been working on various projects related to the party. The work was allegedly monitored by Rajinikanth’s younger daughter Soundharya. Interestingly, this team was kept away even from the office bearers of Rajinikanth Makkal Mandram.

In fact, several ways were thought of in order to simplify launching and registering the party. One such alleged backup plan is reportedly said to have gained prominence after the Election Commission allotted the ‘auto rickshaw’ symbol to the party, Makkal Sevai Katchi (MSK).

Election Commission letter stated that Makkal Sevai Katchi has applied to contest from all 234 constituencies in Tamil Nadu and the symbol, ‘auto rickshaw’ has been allotted to the party. However, sources suggest that the party had requested for ‘twin fingers’ mudra’ symbol called Baba symbol, famously associated with Rajinikanth. However, it was allegedly not approved as it may be confused with Indian National Congress’ ‘open hand’ symbol.

When India Today contacted sources inside team Rajinikanth, the reply was a ‘smile emoji’ with the text: ‘You are 99% correct’. Apparently, MSK had its humble origin as ‘Anaithindhia Makkal Shatki Kazhagam’ two years ago but the name was changed to ‘Makkal Sevai Katchi’ just three months ago.

Sources within Rajinikanth’s team state that it was a pure backup plan and the idea was to register a party under Rajinikanth’s name. But, taking the hurdles of registering a party under consideration and acquiring a symbol that became evident in the 2019 elections after the issues faced by TTV Dhinakaran and Kamal Haasan, MSK was kept dormant.

Rajinikanth’s fans are happy as MSK’s ‘auto rickshaw’ symbol is being associated with Rajinikanth’s role of an auto-rickshaw driver in the film ‘Baashha’.

An office-bearer of Rajinikanth Makkal Mandram stated that he has received confirmation on their official WhatsApp groups about the symbol but said he cannot divulge any further information till January 21.

However a statement issued by Rajinikanth’s Makkal Mandram requested RMM office bearers to be patient until official confirmation was provided by the party headquarters.

Political pandits from Tamil Nadu suggest that this would be a much easier option for Rajinikanth as all that the MSK president had to do now is call for a General Body meeting of the party and announce Rajinikanth as the Party’s General Secretary. The power to control the party can then be handed over to the superstar.

Official confirmation on MSK becoming Rajinikanth’s party is yet awaited as the actor is still busy with shooting for ‘Annathey’ movie till December 29 in Hyderabad.
